Neptune, the Roman god of fresh water and the sea, offers inspiration for the themed Hearst Castle Neptune Pool, a favorite among tourists.
Everybody wants to see the beautiful, aquamarine-blue Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle. The good news is that currently every tour includes the Neptune Pool (check before going). Its patio features an ancient Roman temple front, transported wholesale from Europe and reconstructed at the site. Hearst was an inveterate tinkerer, and would tear down structures and rebuild them at a whim. Neptune Pool was rebuilt three times before Hearst was satisfied.
At the end of the guided portion of your tour, stroll on your own through the gardens and wander at your leisure around the Neptune Pool and the Roman Pool–just as Mr. Hearst's guests did on their vacation in the 1920s and 1930s. Tour admission: $25-36 per tour hearstcastle.org
