WESTMINSTER, CA-- A
Shutter Shak called "Crazy California;
looks like a camera but is 1,000 times
bigger and houses old cameras.
Built in 1976 the Shutter Shak was located in a commercial center on Goldenwest Avenue south of Bolsa Avenue. A California Crazy is a building whose design reflects the purpose for which it was built. there were over 100 California Crazy buildings at one time but less than 20 remain today. They are deemed historically significant and have become the subject of documentaries by the likes of Smithsonian.
California Crazy buildings have included restaurants, motels, service stations, and businesses shaped like hot dogs, animals, airplanes, pianos, cameras and other architectural anomalies.
You'll find this California Crazy Shutter Shak at Blakey Historical Park operated by the Westminster Historical Society. You can see the camera building from the street or can visit the grounds where it is located on the first Sunday of the month during museum hours.
