Organized by Ocean Conservancy, The International Coastal Cleanup, began more than 30 years ago with the goal of collecting and documenting the trash on coastlines. Every year on the 3rd Saturday in September, Cleanup Coordinators and volunteers from states and territories throughout the US and more than 150 countries clean-up thousands of beaches, waterways and underwater habitats as well as inland, park and neighborhood areas.
Over the years, this movement has created a global community that spans oceans and country borders
unless otherwise noted. See: oceanconservancy.org for detailed info about participation.
CountyThe International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago when two
dedicated women, Linda Maraniss and Kathy O’Hara, launched the first event in
Texas as part of their work with Ocean Conservancy. Held on the 3rd Saturday in
September usually from 9 a.m. to Noon, it has become the biggest day for
volunteering in California with approx. 900 locations in California this year!
Ocean Conservancy maintains the world’s largest, open-source database on marine
debris and has helped more than one million Californians participate to clean up
beaches, rivers, parks and outdoor spaces where trash accumulates. Not limited
to beaches, volunteers throughout the state can pick diverse locations to pitch
in.
