The Costa Mesa Historical Society and Museum
is pleased to present Richard Parks, as its
speaker on Sunday March 17, 2013.
Richard's discussion will include a short
history on hot roddiing in Southern
California, the transition from street
racing to Bonneville and drag strips, the
need for safety in racing and finally the
importance of preserving its history for
posterity.
Richard comes well qualified for this topic.
He is the oldest son of Wally Parks who was
involved in land speed racing both before
and after World War II. His father was the
President of the Southern California Timing
Association (SCTA) in 1947 and procured the
rights to race at Bonneville in 1949. He
founded the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA)
in 1951.
Around 2000, Richard began writing as a
hobby on automotive sports and a few other
topics and has produced almost 500 articles
since then. He created the Boat Racers
Reunion and ran the Boat Racers Reunion
Newsletter for 7 years. He also edited the
Car Racers Newsletter, three genealogical
newsletters and the Society of Land Speed
Racing Historians Newsletter. Richard is a
lifetime member of the Wally Parks NHRA
Motorsports Museum and The Parke Society (a
genealogical society) and has operated two Honorary Awards Programs.

admission and refreshments. We are located at 1870 Anaheim Ave. in the
northwest corner of the Lions Park complex.
