Newport Beach Beaches: Newport Beach, California has a series of beaches on a peninsula that feature lifeguard stands corresponding to the street numbers intersecting Balboa and Newport Boulevards running parallel to the beach.
Shown in the picture is the 28th Street lifeguard stand located near Newport Pier and McFadden Square.
Though not always manned with lifeguards, there are stands at regular intervals scattered along the beach. When locals meet they make pick a street number, name or even a lifeguard tower number where they'll find each other. It's a useful way to figure out where you are.
Sometimes we take strolls at Newport Beach as the sun goes down. The beach paths are barely visible from the shoreline, so the numbered lifeguard towers help us to know where to find the parked car.
