The Wedge is one of Newport Beach's top tourist attractions. It is a wedge of water action created by a jetty that takes the onslaught of incoming Pacific waves, then launches them back into the sea where the bounce-back waves meets up with a new, incoming wave to create something akin to a wedge shape.
Riding these waves is a tremendous challenge providing one of the greatest rushes for seasoned wave riders. But for the uninitiated or even those with experience, the results of miss-timing or nature's sheer force has created in the past broken bones, broken necks, broken backs, and even death.
Trying your hand at The Wedge is not recommended for vacationers who
think it looks like fun but have no practical background in taking on this
challenging the situation. It could ruin a great trip. Just watch like the
crowd does and get to know it before you ever head in for a ride.
