Sunset Beach, California, the comfortable & cozy beach isn't filled with pretention. It's every man's beach, and its homes include great little beach "shacks" such as the home shown in the photo.
Especially endearing about this Southern California beach town is its charm. The photo shows a collection of buoys strung to a short fence built as a divider between a house and N. Pacific Avenue.
The "shacks" you'll see in Sunset Beach are part of the town's history spanning over 100 years. It used to be a stop on the Red Car line from Los Angeles, and as of this posting the building where tickets were sold is still standing and being used as Mother's bar.
For a wonderful diversion, exit Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach and drive the 1-mile distance along next to the beach and greenbelt running parallel to Highway 1. You'll see many charming cottages and even some castles. Stop the car and take a walk along the greenbelt. There are even several park benches under shade trees where you can relax and soak it all up.
