Sunset Beach shoreline is the daytime hub of action. After all, people go to see the beach!
The ocean waves come in from the west, and the beach is known for its sloped shelf. It looks mild and sometimes at low tide can be easy to navigate and wander out. However, caution should always be advised in this location as looks may be deceiving.
Kids love to play just at and in the water's edge at Sunset Beach, and the mile-long beach is also a favorite for those who want to take beach strolls in their bare feet. Lifeguards are usually on duty during the day, but if you go always look to see where they are. And use the buddy system when going in the water.
You'll notice in the photograph that the sand is dark and nearly brown. This is due partially to the afternoon sun and the color tones. However, the sand typically at this location is fairly dark and sometimes quite grainy, which means it may contain bits of shells. The sand is great for making sandcastles and though it isn't the sugary textured sand you may find around the bend in nearby Seal Beach, the sand at Sunset Beach is firm enough for great strolls, and for making a comfortable cushion when you sunbathe or sit and watch the sea.
