InMotionHosting.com = affordable, and its services have improved over the past decade
Building websites or working on the Internet is becoming harder and harder. If you can afford the fees, it's almost better to pay someone to handle all the problems that arise. The "hired hands" often won't care like you do, and they probably won't get back to you ASAP, especially on weekends or holidays. But when handling it yourself, the learning curve may require that you spend the entire weekend and holiday just learning about the technical issues, sometimes without resolving situations.
We've hosted a number of websites with a company called InMotionHosting.com (after trying Hostway, Dreamhost, Hostgator, Godaddy, and many more.) InMotionHosting offers really good pricing and they have lots of do-it-yourself tools for installing WordPress blogs, Drupal, and many great freeware or shareware products. However, they have security issues. The entire West Coast client-base experienced an intrusion several years back. Millions of websites had their home page changed to a black screen with bouncing red letters, "YOU'VE BEEN HACKED!" SeeCalifornia.com lived through it and saw the light of day.
The latest "Brute Force Attacks" that come from countries such as Russia begin pounding website logins. Their favorite is Word Press, where many users never change the default "admin" name for logging in. Like killer bees, these attack machines swarm and batter the servers, trying to break-in. While InMotionHosting company isn't responsible for such attacks, they blame their customers for not preventing the results of these unwanted intrusions, high server usage.
There are many web hosting companies out there expecting their users to be savvy and either read up on, or follow complicated sets of instructions to fix problems. Unfortunately, many of the solutions don't work or they can create other issues making your website crash.
Affordable web hosting companies such as InMotionHosting.com offer pricing and tools that appeal to a non-tech audience. The problems arise after you've paid your annual fee. Sometimes the technical support can make matters worse when they try to help. One of them "fixed" our websites by bringing them all down. Nice!
Another company we've used, Hostway.com, was hacked and never actually owned up to it. The off-shore technical support says in broken English, "It's not our problem, it's yours!" That's been their standard line on nearly every issue throughout the years. Their best service techs are sales people, of course!
If you're looking for a great web hosting company, it's unlikely it will be cheap $15-25/month. That said, even the best companies and those in the cloud can be penetrated and temporarily taken down. A firewall is a good start in slowing the attacks. And when your site has been compromised, companies such as Sucuri will fix it for a fee.
