Spreckels, CA

Monterey, California's little neighbor, Spreckels, got its name for sugar. For all who remember Spreckels Sugar, the town came into existence for its role in sugar production, supporting the sugar plant in the region. The largest sugar beet factory in the world in 1899 was here. Sugar beets were a popular crop throughout California, and especially on the Central Coast from Monterey to San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

A trip back in time, the houses are buildings in little Spreckels are well-maintained, original structures capturing the flavor of this once sweet success of a story.

You will find Spreckels off Highway 68 between Monterey and Salinas.

Its major annual event is the 4th of July celebration that the town comes out to enjoy. If you ever could roll back the clock, perhaps Spreckels is your best bet for capturing what it was like 100 years ago when Spreckels was booming. Ignore the Iphones and modern tech toys that people enjoy even in Spreckels when you visit. It isn't THAT old fashioned that the locals don't enjoy modern conveniences. However, when you arrive at Spreckels Park and get into the spirit with the 10k run, parade, and locally grown foods that taste soooo good, you'll understand why this part of California is loved so much by those who call it home.
