What we know Winters for is a quirky festival -- Winters Earthquake Festival which celebrates the great earthquake of 1892. This unique event includes a Harvest Festival and Farmer's Market and is usually held the third Friday in August. Earthquake faults in the Winters were responsible for the 1892 shaker that caused damage to buildings in nearby Vacaville.
Other events include a very patriotic 4th of July Fireworks show and Youthday held on last Saturday in April.
Famous resident and world-renown cartoonist, Robert Crumb, known for Zap Comix, Fritz the Cat and Keep on Truckin', lived in Winters when he created many of the satirical and subversive cartoons that Americans fell in love with. The Pennsylvania born artist and illustrator lived in Winters with cartoonist wife Aline Kominsky, his wife. They moved to Winters in 1978, started a family and Crumb gained popular notoriety in the underground comics movement. In 1993 Crumb left California and moved to France to embark on a new chapter in his career.
Winters hosts artists in regularly scheduled art walk events, but much of the inspiration for art creations comes from the landscape. Winters weather offers the ideal climate for growing wheat, walnuts, almonds, grains, fruits and tomatoes. Don't be surprised to see farm stands selling fresh produce from the fields to your hands. Locals often don't appreciate how lucky they are to enjoy fresh off the farm foods.
