Finding Angels in California

During the Christmas holiday people take time to relax, contemplate and celebrate religious traditions. Today, December 19, 2014, as the National Children's Choir performs at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, you may hear the words being sung: "Hark, the herald angels sing." The popular Christmas carol is near and dear to many hearts in California where you can actually see angels if you know where to look. Here are a few places where you may find them:

  • Angels Camp – In 1848, the angel that gave this Gold Rush city its name was storekeeper Henry Angel.
  • Angel Island – Spanish naval vessel San Carlos made the first European entry to the San Francisco Bay under the command of Juan de Ayala in 1775, the . Ayala anchored off Angel Island, and named it Isla de los Ángeles or Island of the Angels.
  • Angels Flight in Los Angeles is known as the shortest railway in the world.
  • Los Angeles, which means The Angels, is often called the City of the Angels. Founded in 1781, it may have gotten its name from the Franciscan settler Father Juan Crespi.
  • Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim ball team has gone through several name changes, but always keeps "Angels" as a component, originating from the City of Los Angeles.
  • Angels Gate Light in Los Angeles Harbor is a light station that's been a beacon for the busy Port of Los Angeles since 1913. The lighthouse sits in San Pedro Bay.
  • Angels Gate Park operated by the City of Los Angeles overlooks the Los Angeles Harbor.
  • Hells Angels, a motorcycle club, was founded in Fontana, California in 1948.
  • Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles serves the total Archdiocese of over 5 million Catholics. As the heart of all 287 Parish Churches and communities, it is the place where the Archbishop celebrates the major Liturgies of the year with clergy, religious and laity.
  • The Angel Festival – entering its 22nd year in 2015, this Southern California event celebrates angels through costumes, plays, hands-on activities and more.
