Santa is an amazing guy. In California, he arrives by sleigh,
stagecoach, kayak, helicopter, train, yacht—you name it. He really
has connections and knows how to get around and how to make an
entry! He even comes from above. You never really know what you
might see in the state's skies. It could be fireworks, the aerobatic
jets of the Air Force Thunderbirds, and, yes, even Mr. Claus.
Recently, as I was gazing up in the sky above Huntington City Beach,
low and behold, a lone plane circling thousands of feet near the
clouds caught my attention. Next thing I knew, not one but two elves
leaped out of it and started gracefully gliding across the sky. They
were followed by a jolly old fellow, in a red suit, who looked a lot
like St. Nick himself. I never knew he could fly. Hundreds of
people—big and small—witnessed the same scene as I did. Their
anticipation and awe built as the three projectiles wove their way
in mid-air for their approach next to the Pacific Ocean. All three
made precision landings on the sand in a candy cane-cordoned-off
area.
Although there was no snow, there was plenty of sand; no sleigh but
a bicycle for Santa to peddle across Pacific Coast Highway to event
sponsor Pacific City, where he proceeded to an Air Stream for
holiday photos, live Christmas singing and gifts to happy kids.
Watching Santa drop from the sky—a first for the city—was Huntington
Beach Mayor Jim Katapodis, "That's the kind of entrance I love to
see, especially after our big airshow last month." "I've never seen
anything like this," said an excited Danny Barrios, a concert
pianist, who was coming out of the water after his daily swim. "At
first, I thought it was Superman and for many, Santa is."
Santa said he was excited about broadening his holiday approach by
jumping from a plane. "I'll do anything I can to come and listen to
kids and adults and offer them good advice. I work to make the world
a friendlier place. Ho Ho Ho!"
Body surfer Jake Carter thought it was "cool" having Santa arrive
from the sky. "He definitely came from the direction of the North
Pole," said the Golden West College student. "That jolly fellow
really knows how to get around. By land, by sea by air. I admire his
courage, his timeliness and the joy he brings to so many."
There's more to see and do in Huntington Beach, and the best way to get to know the place is by visiting and enjoying an excellent vacation.
