California's largest fireworks show! July 4, 2024, 9 p.m.
The Big Bay Boom fireworks show is displayed from Four barges on San Diego Bay. The renowned fireworks show shells out roughly $250,000 for 18 minutes of aerial amazement in which 5,000+ fireworks in the form of mortar shell tubes rise into the San Diego Bay, visible from:
Shelter Island
Harbor Island
North Embarcadero
Marina District
Coronado Ferry Landing
Boating/On The Water
Pyro-Spectaculars has produced the show recently, and has also produced Lights on the Lake 4th of July Fireworks in South Lake Tahoe.
Not to be forgotten is the 2012 event which was seen and heard around the world through media coverage. It's the year that shocked fans and the producers watched the dream go up in smoke in a 30 second explosion. That year there was a computer glitch or malfunction that ignited all the fireworks at once. Garden State Fireworks employees may have been a bit shaken but they've recently done shows such as the 2020 Presidential inauguration at the White House in Washington, D.C. so San Diego's 4th of July Big Bay Boom 2012 goes down in history as one of the wildest shows ever.
Bring your lawn chairs, friends and boats to watch the fireworks from many locations around the bay. An estimated 255,000 people watched the Big Bay Boom last year. 34% or approx. one-third of attendees reported last year that they are non-local. Of those out-of-area visitors, nearly 50% came to San Diego for the primary purpose of attending the fireworks with the majority staying in a hotel during their visit. Visitors spent an average of 4.8 room nights at $248.85 per night.
4 or 5 days in San Diego nearly covers the time it takes to go to SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Old Town, San Diego Safari Park, Balboa Park, Point Loma Lighthouse and Cabrillo National Monument, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Belmont Park, Coronado Island with landmark Hotel Del Coronado, Little Italy, Mission Bay and watch a ball game at Petco Park. In the old days, tourists used to make day trips to Tijuana. Due to safety issues and time crossing the border to get back into the U.S., this is not a popular option it once was.
Big Bay Boom generates close to $1 million tax revenue for the city of San Diego and has an estimated $74.4 million impact! The title sponsor of the fireworks, the Port of San Diego contributed some $383,500 to cover a variety of costs.
