Santa Barbara July 4, 2011 spiritof76sb

After an extensive four-month survey and questionnaire of volunteers, supporters, friends, and past participants, Spirit of `76 decided that the theme for the 4annual 4th of July Parade will be...

America: Land of Promise

"We have a number of exciting community projects in the works for this year, but the parade always tops the list for enthusiasm from the community," says Paul Lamberton, president of Spirit of `76. "We were happy to see so many people get involved in helping us decide on this year's theme."

The announcement of the theme gives participants in the parade some structure to help them prepare their presentation. "America was built on promises of freedom, dignity, and equal protection under the law," Lamberton continues. "Those promises are as relevant today as they were when they were first articulated two hundred and thirty-three years ago."

The parade will take place on July 4, 2011.

The grand march begins at 1:00 p.m. at Micheltorena Street and proceeds down State Street to Old Town Santa Barbara, concluding at Cota Street.

Redwood Coast 4th of July

Eureka just won't give up on Independence Day fireworks.

Local businesses have come forward to support what officials say will be perhaps the best fireworks display in years -- and a pick-me-up during otherwise difficult times.

"If there was ever a time when we needed something positive and celebratory, this is it," said Eureka Chamber of Commerce President J Warren Hockaday at a news conference at the foot of F Street .

The Best Western Bayshore Inn is underwriting much of the cost of the fireworks display, which in all will cost about 0,000. About 8,000 has been raised in total.

Eureka City Councilman Mike Jones thanked the businesses that have stepped up to make the show possible.

"We still have a lot of work to do, though," Jones said.

The shortfall may have to be made up by other donors and by collecting a little here and a little there from area residents. Local businesses will have collection containers on hand asking for " or two" from firework enthusiasts.

The fireworks display will be put on by Rialto-based Pyro Spectaculars. It will include giant 8-inch aerial shells, sure to put on a serious show.

It's all scheduled to start just after sunset on July 4.

This year with all the fires throughout our great state of California and having to breathe the smoke-filled air over the past few weeks, please let the professionals handle the fireworks. We don't need any additional, accidental fires…
