The Fortuna Rodeo was launched in 1921 when the Cattlemen's Association of Humboldt County planned a picnic. It was to be an afternoon and evening affair, with "Rodeo Stunts" after the barbecue and a dance in the evening with the intention of making it the biggest and jolliest picnic of the year! This year, THREE mutton busting opportunities for your little ones to sign up for! Saturday during the rodeo  10 mutton busters, Saturday night during Bulls, Broncs, Bands and Brews 15, and then on Sunday during the rodeo another 10. Mutton busters must be between ages 5-8 and bring their own helmet (bicycle helmet is acceptable). Also one performance of steer riding on Saturday night during Bulls, Broncs, Bands and Brews for the older kids, ages 9-14.  There's team roping, ribbon roping, rescue race and hide race. PRCA, prorodeo.com The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the largest and oldest rodeo-sanctioning body in the world. Unlike most other professional sports, where contestants are paid salaries regardless of how well they do at a particular competition, cowboys generally pay to enter each rodeo. If they place high enough to win money, they probably make a profit, but if they don't, they've lost their entry fee and any travel expenses. PRCA's membership includes roughly 6,000 cowboys - contestants from cowboys who compete in professional rodeo for a living, to those who work at other jobs during the week and compete in nearby rodeos on the weekends. Card-carrying cowboy members must earn at least $1,000 at PRCA-sanctioned rodeos.
