The Iron Mike Paddle and Paddle Planet Festival is in honor of Mike McKay, A Solana Beach Lifeguard who passed well before his time. The event is a celebration of Mike's life and the things he cared for the most; family, friends, being active in the outdoors and having fun. The event starts at 8:30am on Saturday, Aug. 15th at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach with the prone and SUP 5 mile paddle. Perfect for all skill levels. The Grom-O-Rama (a surf contest for kids 17 and under) will begin shortly after the start of the Paddleboard Race. Followed by: awards ceremony for the winners, boardswap (buy/sell/trade used boards), booths/vendors, live music, raffle, food truck, beer garden and a fun family atmosphere. It's the 5rd annual and the penultimate race in the Michelob Ultra SUP and Prone Paddleboard tour that has been going on throughout the summer. For the 5rd year in a row the Surf Race to Victory, presented by Michelob Ultra, saw overhead waves for the SUP race competitors. Despite a delayed start and low visibility, there was some great racing in and out of the surf. Mo Freitas and Morgan Hoesterey took first, beating out competition from around the world, and winning a big piece of the $5,000 cash purse.
The Surf Race to Victory tests all around waterman ability, grit and determination. Successful racers must combine paddling and surfing skills in and out of the surfline. Starting from the sand before a V shaped course, SUP racers charge through the surf and round outside buoys twice before catching waves back to the finish. The exciting knockout format is run in heats with top finishing racers advancing into each next round. Non-advancing racers are given a second chance to qualify to the main event through repechage heats. We're the only SUP event to require helmets (don't worry racers, those are provided!) as you battle it out in and out of the waves on SUP raceboards (12'6 and under).

Paddlers enter the water at Tamarack in front of lifeguard station 34, just on the north side of the jetty; the course is a water start & finish; head straight west about 1,000 yards to line up at the beginning of a 3 mile buoyed triangle course, which heads south then loops back heading a bit west, then east back to start buoy; repeat course to finish 6 miles. This distance race is headed by Legends of Carlsbad and Chandler Surf.

It's a quick one: Beach start & finish just north of lifeguard station 35; Head straight out 600 meters past the break, turn south for 300 meters, then to shore 600 meters to complete a 1-mile buoy rectangle.
SUP CROSS RACE
There's nothing more fun or exciting! Battle the break multiple times as you race out and back twice around the buoyed course just yards off shore. Race is headed by Victory Koredry from Huntington Beach.
