Memorial Day Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial commemoration ceremony will honor Walter Mintus.
Mintus was a WWII radioman aborad a TBM-1c Avenger in the U.S. Navy Torpedo Squadron Fifty One (VT-51). In July of 1944 while on a bombing mission in the islands of Palua in the western Pacific, his aircraft crashed into the waters there with three U.S. airmen onboard. All three aviators were declared missing in action. 72 years later, Project Recover located the Avenger. In June of 2018 Minuts' remains were accounted for and returned to his family.
