San Pedro --Public invited, Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro, CA. Cost: Free. Each year on January 1st Cabrillo Beach Polar Bears crown the year's King & Queen, and take a swim in the ocean, christening the representatives who will officiate throughout the year. In addition, the public is invited to join in a New Year's Polar Plunge held at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro.
While the low-key group of passionate swimmers share an incredible bond in their love of ocean swimming, you'll be amazed at the fan-base that shows up for the annual New Year's Day Polar Plunge event. Hundreds (or thousands) attend this popular event where the weather is usually sunny and typically Southern California warm to show off the fabulous climate to the world during Rose Parade broadcasts in close-by Pasadena, also in in Los Angeles County.
The annual swim began in 1953, say some members, who haven't been swimming quite that long. The event begins around 11:30 a.m. and the swim takes place at Noon. Members of Cabrillo Beach Polar Bears host the event which is free to the public held at the main lifeguard tower near the Cabrillo Beach Clubhouse. Cookies & cocoa are provided by the club members, who swim nearly every day of the year, but invited the public to participate on this special New Year's Day.
The event started out with about 100 swimmers coming, and has grown to 500-1,000 swimmers some years. Los Angeles water temperatures range from 55 to 58 degrees.
