The Biggest Halloween Event On The Planet

  • Make-up prep and dance lessons begin at 12 noon.
  • A Costume Contest is at 2 p.m.
  • Final practice sessions around 2:30 p.m.
  • Thrill the World dance at 3 p.m.

Thrill The World is an annual worldwide simultaneous dance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Every year, people in cities all over the world synchronize their feet to the Thriller routine at exactly the same time across time zones, to raise awareness and funds for humanitarian causes. In 2014 the whole world will be Thrilled at 10 p.m. GMT -- that's 3 p.m. PST precisely.

You don't have to be a dancer to participate, anybody can do the Zombie dance regardless of age or physical abilities. You can learn the routine online or at free dance classes (most people learn the dance in about 45 minutes). See the schedule of classes at www.thrilltheworldbayarea.com.

The group has already beat four world records.

But Thrill The World is more than just beating a world record. It is a celebration of an exemplary humanitarian and performance genius and a celebration of all people around the world as a community, regardless of political, economic or racial background.

In the past, 245 zombies came out of their graves to wreck havoc in the Bay Area. Just imagine, nearly 170 events on 5 continents registered to participate.

Some of the more unexpected locations include Malaysia, Turkey, Russia, Romania, Japan, Columbia, Tasmania, and Rwanda.

The local event is a fundraiser for The People's Grocery, The Black Cat Fund--ICRA and Music in Schools Today.

Oakland is event-driven, and it seems like there's usually more than one thing going on. For other fun events throughout the year, be sure to check out the holiday Lighted Yacht Parade, Nutcracker Ballet, Oktoberfest and the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
