In the annual cycling event which takes place on 750 miles of California roads makes use of 4,000 volunteers along the route, passing through 12 host cities. Amgen Tour of California presented by AEG is a Tour de France-style cycling road race. The teams chosen to participate have included Olympic medalists, Tour de France contenders and World Champions. The peloton (main group of riders in the race) is tested with more than 40,000 feet of climbs, including a categorized climb on every road stage.
In a road bicycle race, the peloton is the main group of riders who may save energy by riding close (drafting or slipstreaming) near and mostly behind other riders. The reduction in drag is dramatic; in the middle of a well-developed group drag can be reduced to as little as 5%-10%. Exploitation of this potential energy saving leads to very complex cooperative and competitive interactions between riders and teams in race tactics.
