California Surf Festivals

California's famed beaches and beach festivals are tantalizing attractions filled with pretty girls in swimsuits, beach bonfires, activities, exercise opportunities and cults--specifically surfing culture. Though surfing is big business in California, as a sport it can't compete for audience exposure, sponsor dollars and athlete salaries like professional baseball, basketball, football or even golf.  That doesn't stop the surfing crowd from putting on a great show. There are some surfing events that are truly a Beach Blast...

Tsuragasaki Beach  July 27, 2021  Hawaii's Carissa Moore is the first Gold Medalist of surfing's first Olympics Games representing Team USA. Carissa worked her way through the quarterfinals and semifinals in day three of surfing Olympic debut, saving her best for the Medal Round against  Bianca Buitendag (South Africa.)

Kolohe Andino was the first American surfer to qualify for Team USA Olympic surf team. Growing up in San Clemente with a pro surfer dad, Kolohe won seven USA Surfing Champion titles and nine National Scholastic Surfing Association championships - a record for boys under 18.

HUNTINGTON BEACH: US Open of Surfing 

Annual festival includes BMX and skateboard competitions with prizes as well as the WQS6 star rated surfing competition held next to Huntington Beach Pier. Event includes multiple arenas and grandstands with simultaneous sports action such as surfing and skateboarding, a Surfers Village with many tents featuring the latest products, music and entertainment. MOST EXCITING / DANGEROUS and defunct as of 2021. Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest invites the world's top surfers who are capable of  handling giant waves. They have approx. 24 hours to fly from around the globe and be in Half Moon Bay when the event is called on a select day in the range of January through March. In October 2017 Titans of Mavericks announced an agreement with WSL Big Wave Tour through 2021. In 2019, after two years of canceled competitions, the World Surf League announced that the contest had been canceled indefinitely.
