LAKE FOREST: Memorial Day Observance at El Toro Memorial Park Samantha Sanchez, an Army combat field medic, will be the keynote speaker at the 2016 Memorial Day Ceremonies at El Toro Memorial Park, according to Planning Committee Co-Chair Ingrid Seiver. Sanchez' talk, titled Seven Layer Cake: A Female Veteran's Story,” will share the complexities of being a female veteran struggling with PTSD in the wake of her service during an eighteen month deployment with a Military Police unit in Iraq. She witnessed countless examples of heroic service on the battlefield and was one of the few women to earn the combat medical badge for treating wounded under fire. In addition to Sanchez, the program will include General Logan's Order presented by Darrell Rivers of the Huntington Beach Historical Society. Rivers is the Co-Director of Huntington Beach Civil War Days, the largest Civil War reenactment in Southern California. One of the flag bearers will be Lt. Muriel Engelman, a World War II Army nurse who treated wounded soldiers on the battlefield in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. Dorothy Flynn, Honorary Regent of the Mission Viejo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. The Observance will take place in the Old Section of El Toro Memorial Park, 25751 Trabuco Road in Lake Forest and will begin promptly at 11:00 AM on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. There is no charge for admission and the public is encouraged to attend. Seating is limited and attendees are urged to arrive early and bring their own lawn chairs. Volunteers will be available in the Park to direct attendees to parking, and to the specific site of the event. We were extremely fortunate to have Sanchez speak at the Observance this year,” said Seiver. She is an inspiring speaker who will leave those who attend with a stirring remembrance of why Memorial Day is one of our country's most important holidays.” The ceremony will also feature a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III flyover by the March Air Reserve Base 729th Airlift Squadron, a VFW honor guard firing salute and a wreath laying ceremony.
