On Saturday before Easter Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m., the annual Blessing of the Animals on Olvera Street takes place. Thousands come to the full day event which is a festival of people and animals — roosters, chickens, iguanas, geckos, dogs, birds, fish in bowls, llamas, snakes, lizards, bugs, rats and cats. Archbishop Jose Gomez gives the blessings at this annual celebration which began in 1930.
It is one of many such celebrations throughout California.
