Independence Day - held every July 4 celebrates the Declaration of Independence signed on July 4, 1776. It took Thomas Jefferson 17 days to draft the document that says:
We hold these truths to be self-evident
--That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,
--That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Colors of the Flag: Red, white & blue: White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice
BBQs: 7 out of 10 Californians who plan to celebrate the holiday will attend a barbecue, cookout or picnic – a record.
Drinking: Last Fourth of July some 34.4 million Americans traveled by car to on the 4th of July holiday. They took part in some of the 74 million BBQs, grilled an estimated 155 million hot dogs, and cracked open about 68 million cases of beer. More beer is sold on Uncle Sam's birthday than on any other holiday (including St. Patrick's Day and New Year's Eve). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that Fourth of July is the worst day of the year for fatal car crashes--40% of all highway deaths between 2007 and 2011 were caused by drunk driving over the Fourth of July weekend.
Shopping: The majority of department stores are open on the 4th. Costco, however, is closed.
Pets: Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Animal control sees a 30% increase in lost pets on July 4 holiday. Keep dogs and pets in the house, create a safe haven and try to drown out the fireworks noise with a radio turned on.
Fireworks: The majority of fireworks injuries happen to children. U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that in the month around July 4, an average of 200 people rush to emergency rooms every day with fireworks-related injuries.
Facebook & Social Media: Don't announce on your favorite social networks that you are not at home during the 4th of July. By doing so you are providing an invitation for burglars to visit and steal you blind!
