BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. -- Now here's a back story that won't necessarily help you improve your backstroke, but it will give you plenty to think about as you cautiously look behind you so as not to run into the cascading stairs in the swimming pool at the Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel. The pleasing aquamarine colored swimming pool with matching foot rests accenting white lawn chairs, was modeled after Sophia Loren's private Marino, Italy villa pool immortalized by LIFE magazine in the 1960s. At the time, the actress lived with her producer-husband, Carlo Ponti, in a  50-room estate outside of Rome with a uniquely shaped pool that was blue, not aquamarine. But the classic Roman shape remains true to the original.

You'll find the gracious swimming pool in the courtyard of the south tower, where its brilliant color reflects in the daylight, casting bluish-green shadows onto three cabanas lining the length of the pool on the side opposite the lounge chairs. Access to this swimming pool is strictly as a hotel or to book a spa treatment 60 minutes or longer. You'd expect nothing less than exclusive access to a place reminiscent of Sophia Loren's once private oasis.
