According to several sources, there are more than 2000 pagodas in China made of brick, wood, stone, jade, iron, copper and other materials that can withstand the elements. Pagodas are not unique to China and likely originated in India, though you'll see them in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and parts of Asia.
Yunyansi Pagoda or Tiger Hill pagoda built in 959 A.D. is considered the symbol of ancient Suzhou, China.
And while you're heading from the city to see Tiger Hill pagoda, you may pass by yet another noticeable landmark, the Besei Pagoda, also known as North Temple Pagoda. It was built in 1162. With its octagonal base, it rises nine stories high.
If you spend some time in China you'll come across quite a few pagodas during your travels. In Hanzhou, be sure to check out Li Gong Pagoda.
