A spray ground is a relatively new concept in recreational water facilities. These facilities have unique design and construction features which are not covered by the existing public swimming pool regulations. The proposed standards are based on enforcement agency experience in responding to citizen concerns for this currently unregulated type of pool. Local recreational park districts and municipalities also desire standards so that their public can safely use these features. The standards proposed are to provide health and safety protection for the users of this type of public pool. This proposal seeks to establish new requirements for spray grounds that have become extremely popular over the past several years. The water features associated with spray grounds typically consist of water fountains, water sprays, dancing water jets, waterfalls, dumping buckets, shooting water cannons, or other such features on a sloped pad that does not allow ponding of water. Typically, a spray ground has a high bather load and a low volume of water. The public health risk associated with this type of use is significant and has been associated with several illness outbreaks around the country. The State of California boasts some of the safest spraygrounds in the nation thanks to new regulations.

Lakeview Park Fountain
Lakeview Park Fountain The fountain at
Lakeview Park isn't just for looks. It is also
an all ages interactive water feature where
cooling your heels is encouraged. A cool way to
beat the heat while taking in the beautiful lake
view. You can feel good splashing that day away!
The fountain is also a water conscious way to
maintain Discovery Lake. A deep well feeds the
fountain which in turn trickles into the lake
that has had a history of evaporating away in
drought years. Maintaining the Lake's water
level also helps protect the lake's ecosystem.
Sprayground Las Posas Sprayground

showers. A zero depth entry, nearly 1,200 square
feet of play area and is ADA accessible.

Sacramento
In May 21, 2003 for the
first time ever the City of Sacramento opened a unique water spray feature located at Gardenland Park
at 310 Bowman Ave. The size of the water spray
feature play area is 968 square feet. Seatwalls
along the perimeter of the water spray area with
shade trees have been built for parent
supervision while children are utilizing the
water spray feature. Designed to hold a
maximum of 36 to 60 children the water spray
feature consists of 12 in-ground spray nozzles.
All the spray nozzles are built below grade to
eliminate any above ground tripping hazards.
The spray nozzles are programmed to shoot out
water at different time intervals. The
controller panel has the capacity to hold 20
different nozzle-spraying sequences, which
increases the non-predictability of the spray
feature system by keeping the children guessing
on which spray nozzles will be activated next.
No standing water will be on the ground while
the water spray feature system is turned on. A
drainage system has been built to carry away and
re-circulate the water from the spray feature.
Adjacent to the water spray feature is a plaza
with shade trees and additional seating benches.
