Climbing Yosemite National Park Half Dome with Cables

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CALIF.–Half Dome is the most famous rock in California. Its shape brings inspiration–and the fact that you can climb it in a day makes the challenge compelling to those in good shape. Usually taking approx. 12 hours to complete, the hike ascends past several waterfalls, into a forest, and above the tree line. A set of installed cables allow hikers to reach the top without hiking tools, just by hanging onto the cables as you climb.

Stunning black and white photos taken by Ansel Adams can be seen at Yosemite National Park where Half Dome awaits your inspection–in living color. And some will do more than gaze up into the sky and take pictures to commemorate the experience. Some will actually climb Half Dome this summer!

Applications are accepted through March 31 annually for getting a permit to climb the rock. The hiking season in which cables are installed goes from late May to early October and the permit process which was established in 2010 limits the number of hikers who can go on the trail, creating a more enjoyable experience and fewer accidents. The permits issued are on a lottery system, so there's no guarantee you'll get one. To apply for a Half Dome permit, visit Recreation.gov or call (877) 444-6777. There's a small fee to apply.

Things to know:

  • Take a gallon of water to drink for the entire hike.
  • Take a flashlight with fresh batteries for descent as it becomes dark.
  • Set your time for your half-way mark. Be prepared to turn around, even if you don't make it all the way.
  • Most injuries occur from slippery conditions. There are around 60-100 rescue injuries along the trail each season.
  • Appropriate, comfortable hiking boots are recommended. Gloves are helpful to some during the cable portion.
  • Watch the excellent video produced by National Park Service that shows the hike experience: nps.gov /yose/planyourvisit/halfdome.htm
  • There are many hikes and trails in Yosemite National Park that are less challenging but so worth it!
