While Long Beach, California holds the distinction of Aquatic Capital of America, locals also recognize it as an art mecca. Some feel it is well recognized as such but many don't know that the city has an arts district and two art museums housed in beautiful facilities. Long Beach Art Museum overlooks the oceanfront and just a few miles distance Museum of Latin American Art makes a bold statement with its built-from-the-ground-up facility anchoring the arts district. The district is a mix of shops, restaurants and residences in downtown Long Beach.
Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), does one thing very well. It
focuses on established and emerging artists representing the Latin
communities locally and globally. The collection of artworks come from all
corners of the Earth and are selected for their unique cultural bends.
Changing exhibitions are unique and often invite local artists to
participate. One event we attended included a
MOLAA shovel made from firearms.
Entertainment to accompany the unveiling showcased break dancers.
