Tourism Cares Grants Money to Travel Industry Causes
Tourism Cares, the non-profit organization in the travel industry dedicated to preserving the travel experience for future generations, is pleased to announce its second group of 2011 Worldwide Grantees.
- Tourism Cares is awarding its second group of grants in 2011 totaling $60,000 to six non-profit organizations as part of its Worldwide Grant Program.
- With all grantees receiving matching funds from other organizations, a total of $120,000 will be presented to tourism-related sites.
- These grants will support the areas of historic preservation and educational programs at cultural and maritime heritage, and natural sites.

Free Children’s Story Time and Book Signing at Museum December 18 Features Local Authors and Illustrators
Reading stories to children is a cherished holiday tradition, so bring your family on Sunday, December 18 between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., for the Museum of Ventura County’s special free story time and book signing. Local children’s book authors and illustrators, including Kathleen Contreras of Ventura, Jody Fickes Shapiro of Ventura, Carol Heyer of Thousand Oaks, Valerie Hobbs and Marnie McGee of Santa Barbara, Alexis O’Neill of Simi, and Amada Irma Perez of Ventura, will read and sign their books. Admission to the museum is free all day.
Children can also have fun with interactive elements in Simms Taback: Making Pictures For Children, an exhibit featuring original illustrations by this artist and author of more than 50 books, including the Caldecott Medal honor book “Joseph Had a Little Overcoat.”

America’s Cup Races in San Diego During November 2011
Beginning Nov. 12, 2011, nine state-of-the-art high-speed catamarans representing seven nations will take to San Diego Bay at speeds over 30 miles per hour. The America’s Cup World Series kicks off on opening weekend, Nov. 12-13, with three fleet races, and culminates Nov. 16-20, when teams compete for Series points during the Match and Fleet Racing Championships.
Embarcadero, Harbor Island, Shelter Island, Coronado Ferry Landing and numerous other bay locations in San Diego offer breathtaking views of the action as the vessels catapult from the starting line just off downtown’s Navy and Broadway Piers. A variety of other activities on land will complement the exciting action on water, including food and shopping at the America’s Cup Village, a racing simulator ride, battle of the bands live music event and more (AmericasCup.com/sandiego).
Carlsbad Gets Kia Classic Back in 2012
CARLSBAD, CALIF.–Newly renovated resort La Costa Resort and Spa will play host to the event on renamed Legends course where the inaugural event was held in 2010. The tournament, which will feature a 144-player field in the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association), will be played March 19-25, 2012.
A $50 million renovation project that has taken place at La Costa over the past year relocated 2011 Kia Classic to Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms in the City of Industry , Calif. The tournament returns in 2012 to a venue that has hosted numerous professional golf tournaments throughout the years. La Costa Resort and Spa, home to one of golf’s iconic venues, has also renamed its two 18-hole layouts – the Champions Course and Legends Course. The new Champions Course, the former North Course, is undergoing a complete restoration project and is scheduled to reopen in November. It is now paired with the Legends Course, formerly the South Course, on which four holes have been renovated, as La Costa enhances its reputation as a world-class golf destination. The 2012 Kia Classic will be played exclusively on the Legends Course.
Kring & Chung Newport Beach Triathlon Winners – Evan Kraus and Keri Olson
Irvine and Newport Beach natives take home the titles for the longest running 34th Anniversary triathlon at a recent Newport Beach, Calif. event. 800 athletes took part in the Newport Beach Triathlon held at the Newport Back Bay.
The swim portion was a half-mile loop in the Back Bay. The bike route consisted of 15 miles around Back Bay Drive, and then a 5K in an out and back loop around Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. Evan Kraus, 25-year-old native from Irvine, CA won the event in 1:07:48. He was first place through the swim, 2nd on the bike and 6th on the run. Kraus won by 25 seconds over the second place finisher, Karl Schultz. Overall first place finisher for the females was Keri Olson, a 37-year-old native from Newport Beach, CA. She came in with a blazing 1:19:09, just 1:46 before the 2nd place female, Lara Ray, from Camarillo. Keri was 92nd overall in the swim, 36th for the biking portion, and 11th place overall in the run.
