Antelope Valley Ballet or AVB, was established in 1998 by Kathleen Burnett and Lara Arnaiz. The non-profit organization was formed with goals to be a positive force in the cultural climate of the Antelope Valley. Antelope Valley Ballet presents a spring performance in addition to its annual production of The Nutcracker at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center.
Burnett moved to Los Angeles in 1996, accepting a teaching position at Tremaine Dance Center and touring the country teaching ballet technique and choreography with the Tremaine Dance Conventions.
Burnett has studied dance at Point Park College where she was selected to work with choreographers such as Michael Uthoff, Chen Min, and Ron Cunningham and learned the choreographic classics of Ruth Page from Mr. Kenneth Johnson. She graduated with a B.A. in dance, magna cum laude. Holding a graduate teaching assistantship at the University of Oklahoma, she completed an M.F.A. in ballet and rose to the rank of Assistant Professor of Ballet. Choreographing 9 ballets for Oklahoma Festival Ballet and serving as Ballet Mistress, rehearsal assistant, and principal dancer for the company, Burnett's life was never dull, and always filled with dance.
She has held roles of Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Miranda in The Tempest, Fate in James Clouser's Carmina Burana, the Pigtail Girl and the First Student in Graduation Ball, The Sugar Plum Fairy and The Dew Drop Fairy in The Nutcracker, and Primavera Grand Pas de Deux.
In 1996 Burnett received Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma and received the Ballet Choreography Award (twice).
In 1996 she accepted a teaching position at Tremaine Dance Center in Los Angeles and began touring the country teaching ballet technique and choreography with the Tremaine Dance Conventions. She teaches in the Antelope Valley at Dance Magic, Dancin in Acton, and the Antelope Valley College in addition to private lessons in Los Angeles.
