The park extends from Mountain View Avenue (just east of downtown Carmel) southward to the Carmel Mission. There are two main entrances - one on Mountain View Ave and one on Rio Road across from the Carmel Mission.

The Murphy House located inside the First Murphy Park is owned and maintained
by the Carmel Heritage Society, and is open to the public Wednesday -
Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. (subject to change). Built in 1902 by Michael Murphy who was only 17 at the time, he became one of Carmel's renown
builders.

Coast Live Oak, Manzanita, Douglas Iris, Bush Anemone, Red-flowering Currant and Catalina Ironwood drought tolerant trees and plants were integrated into the design by landscape architect Walter Guthrie. Some garden plants are unique to the region, and are not seen outside of California. The park is maintained by volunteers of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Garden Club.

The California native plant garden features more than 100 labeled plants and
a brochure describing the plants at each park entrance. The garden is open
everyday from dawn to dusk. Dogs are not permitted. Hitching posts and watering
bowls for dogs at each entrance.

Throughout the park there are reminders of Carmel Valley's past: Rumsen
Indian habitation sites, homestead, hunting and logging remains, livestock
trails, ponds and springs, and Rancho Don Juan. There is a ranger and volunteer
staff.
