Historic U-Drive Neon Sign
Balboa Fun Zone in Balboa Village sits along the waterfront. As you wander around the area while waiting for your ride on the Balboa Ferry, Catamaran to Catalina Island, fishing boat, harbor or whale watching cruise, you may notice a fantastic sign up in the air. U-DRIVE historic sign dates back to the 1930s when neon art was designed to grab your attention. This particular sign succeeded in doing so with its bold, colorful graphics by day, and glowing neon lights by night.

Dozens of names are listed on a plaque near the sign, which overlooks the entrance to Balboa Ferry. Names we recognize are Debra Huse (artist) and publishers Gay Wassall-Kelly & Bill Kelly, and Jim & Nikki Wood.
Balboa Village has a rich and storied past filled with music and dance, Hollywood filming, the famous Red Car and amusement rides. One ride is still there, the bayside Ferris Wheel. Gone in recent years are the colorful, musical carousel and bumper car rides, along with an arcade featuring dozens of great games.
