San Diego Zoo Giant Pandas - In 2012 there are three giant pandas (including the newest panda, Yun Zi, born on August 5, 2009). The first two giant panda cubs were born at the San Diego Zoo, in 1999 and 2003, making history as the first U.S. born survivors into adulthood. Bai Yun has birthed all five cubs to date:
At San Diego Zoo in 2012: Yun Zi, male, born in 2009 to parents: Bai Yun and Gao Gao
In China:
Hua Mei, female born in 1999 to parents: Bai Yun and Shi Shi.
Mei Sheng, male born in 2003 to parents: Bai Yun and Gao Gao
Su Lin, female born in 2005 to parents: Bai Yun and Gao Gao
Zhen Zhen, female born in 2007 to parents: Bai Yun and Gao Gao
These San Diego-born cubs except Yun Zi have been sent to China to participate in the breeding program there. A viewing area and exhibit area nearby called Giant Panda Discovery Center has interactive exhibits that let the visitor experience first hand what the animals smell and sound like.
