San Clemente, California -- San Clemente Pier is one of the highlights of visits to Orange County, California where there are five major piers in four beach cities and numerous, small fishing piers in Newport Beach.
The pleasure pier that sits at the bottom of a hill is called a fishing pier and like other California public piers, you can fish for free, but must adhere to size and catch limits. You'll see people fishing from the pier most any day, but you'll also see another activity--eating! In addition to free fishing, the pier has indoor/outdoor restaurant dining with affordable prices by pier standards and views that are among the best on the coast! One of the top fun things to watch when they can be spotted are the migrating whales that frequent this area. You can also see surfers most every day, surfing competitions often, kids playing on the beach, and the Amtrak trains passing by approx. every half hour to hour.
The first San Clemente Pier in 1928 was 1,200 feet long. It was a wooden municipal fishing & pleasure pier constructed at no cost to local citizens. In 1939, and again in 1983, strong storms damaged the pier requiring it to be rebuilt.
A bait and tackle shop, restrooms and Fishermans restaurant greets visitors at the entrance to the pier. The pier itself is located near the end of Del Mar Street and can be difficult to find. The rule of thumb for exploring all the windy roads that eventually lead to the beach is that you are sometime going to come across a sign that say San Clemente Pier, and it will point the direction you need to go.
