Knott's annual food and wine festival pays homage to the theme park's heritage in which founder Walter Knott named and made popular a new fruit when he began selling boysenberries at his fruit stand in Buena Park in 1932. The boysenberry, a cross between the European raspberry and European blackberry, was created by Napa inventor/horticulturist, Rudolph Boysen, but he abandoned his hybrid plant experiment after growing berries in Northern California and moving with his plants to Anaheim. Walter Knotts got wind of this potentially marketable fruit and was able to grow the delicious berry ideal for jams and baked pies.
Knotts Berry Farm's annual Boysenberry Festival features one-of-a-kind boysenberry inspired dishes and beverages with more than 75 unique boysenberry-inspired creations crafted by the Knott’s culinary team. The event that's a hit hosted the World Boysenberry Pie Eating Championship at one of the past festival events circa 2016!
In addition, the Knott's Boysenberry Festival offers local crafters, live music, musical stage shows, and fun activities for all ages. The 2024 event introduces entirely new food offerings with more than two dozen food and drink items. Here are past boysenberry-inspired treats:
Though the theme park remains closed, the food and merchandise-focused outdoor event offers over 65 boysenberry-infused food and drink items included on the event tasting card.
Guests can also shop from a wide variety of boysenberry-inspired merchandise including event apparel, kitchenware, and pre-packaged take-home sweets. In addition, you will find handmade and personalized gifts from over 20 artisan local crafters offering unique boysenberry items.
