Angelus Oaks in the San Bernardino mountains got its name from the combination of a place called Seven Oaks into Camp Angelus. There are no more than a couple hundred residents who live in the unincorporated San Bernardino mountain paradise at an elevation of 5,800 feet.

Located "down hill" by several thousand feet elevation from the ski slopes of Big Bear Lake, Angelus Oaks does experience snow in the winter though it doesn't have tourist attractions such as ski slopes, marinas, and public facilities to invite vacationers to come stay. While you will find a restaurant, gas station, general store, post office, real estate office, lodgings and a Forest Service facility to serve the residents and tourists passing through on State Highway 38, vacationers coming to Angelus Oaks are primarily using private camp facilities. The popular summer campsites are reserved for churches, scouts and other such groups, and have existed for decades. Several of them include Camp Tahquitz for Boy Scouts and a camp for Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Jenks Lake has fishing and swimming, though vacationers generally enjoy Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead for fishing, boating, and recreational water sports.

Highway 38 has occasionally been the only road to exit the mountain to the Los Angeles basin during wildfire episodes that have occurred in recent years.

As you descend the mountain into Redlands area, you'll pass through Mentone at the base of the mountain. Make sure you know about the historic places to stop and visit in Redlands, for instance. You will discover some amazing historic buildings, though you will have to veer off this main road to explore the attractions.
