It’s the new year and you’ve made a resolution to be good to yourself by getting healthy.  But there are plenty of health problems popping up that go undiagnosed, and some may be attributed to consumption of GMOs. That fact that doctors often recommend removing GMOs from your diet suggests that they are seeing positive results in the effort.

Tips to avoid GMOs: Buy organic; look for non-GMO Project seals; avoid at risk ingredients such as sugar (unless it is cane sugar), and buy products with labels stating No rBGH, rBST, or artificial hormones.

What are GMOs? Genetically modified organisms. Why avoid them? They are not natural foods. They have been created in a science lab, and may contain Roundup poison, or other toxins.

Where do you find GMOs in your foods? The eight GM food crops are Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian Papaya (most) and a small amount of Zucchini and Yellow Squash. Foods that include these ingredients are GMO foods, with the exception of some popcorn, etc.

Where can I get non-GMO foods?   The use of GMOs is prohibited in all ingredients in ‘organic’ and ‘made with organic’ (specified ingredients or food groups(s)). Walmart sells many GMO products. Trader Joe’s is a great place shop for non-GMO foods. The store claims that Trader Joe labeled products are non-GMO. Look for products that use sugar cane instead of sugar, and don’t contain soy, corn or canola oils. That’s a start.
