Gold Medals at World Swim Championships Go to Two USC Grads

Granite Bay’s Haley Anderson, a recent USC communications grad, just won the first gold medal of the 2013 FINA World Aquatics Championships in the women’s 5-kilometer open water in Barcelona, Spain. USC grad/assistant coach, Oussama Mellouli (world’s reigning Olympic and World Championships gold medalist in the 1500m freestyle,) won the men’s event.

The two California swimmers participated in the biggest aquatic competition next to the Olympic Games, in which a record 181 out of 196 countries around the world particpate in Swimming, Diving, Open Water Swimming, Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo between July 19 and August 4, 2013.   Anderson swam the 5km race in 56 minutes, 34.2 seconds; Mellouli, who is from Tunisia,  swam it in 53 minutes, 30.4 seconds.
