Pictured is an evening scene in Beijing, where I visited a unique (and touristy) shopping area that actually had a McDonald’s restaurant. Sitting down with my California travel companions to drink a Coke as they munched on comfort foods, Chicken McNuggets & fries, we had an experience that happened more than once during our travels throughout China. A Chinese man sitting at a table nearby snapped away, taking pictures of us with his cell phone. He grinned from ear t0 ear and stared. In other cities in China we were met with similar stares and laughs. The interest was similar to watching animals in a zoo and being entertained by them.
My friends and I have always wondered what these people were thinking and why they were laughing. Were they laughing at us? We’ll never know.
