As tragic as the Yosemite fire is, barreling its way through forests and burning nearly everything in its path, I learned on a recent tour (before the Rim Fire started) that wildfires are a necessary part of the ecosystem of the Sierra Nevadas and Yosemite. If you go to Yosemite National Park, do take the bus tour which goes through the valley. Though you may have a car and can see many of the sights on your own, the narrative is especially interesting.
