The Great Dickens Fair in San Francisco celebrates 35 years beginning Saturday, November 23 through December 22, 2013
“A Christmas Carol” appeared on the scene 170 years ago on December 19, 1843. The story about a miserly, bitter Ebenezer Scrooge who made his employees work during Christmas with no regard for their impoverished lives was written by English author Charles Dickens. He had toured Cornish tin mines where he saw children working in appalling conditions, then was further shocked to witness half-starved, illiterate street children in institutions. He planned to create a political pamphlet about the negative effects of the Industrial Revolution on society, but decided a deeply felt Christmas narrative would have greater impact toward change.
