There are 34 national wildlife refuges in California. Not to be confused with national parks or state parks, these attractions are operated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife. California’s wildlife refuges span the state and range from well known Tijuana Slough to lesser visited but spectacular Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. America’s national wildlife refuges offer free admission (an annual inducement to visit public lands) on these days in 2014:
January 20: Martin Luther King Jr. Day
February 15-17: Presidents’ Day weekend
September 27: National Public Lands Day
October 12: The first day of National Wildlife Refuge Week
November 11: Veterans Day
