California’s communication past is remembered in historic facilities and exhbits such as the Art Deco-styled RCA Coast Station KPH, accessed through a Monterey cypress tree tunnel on the “G” Ranch at Point Reyes Beach. The station’s radio equipment which dates to the World War II-era, comes back to life at an annual event, Night of Nights, on July 12. The public is invited to the commemoration of maritime radio transmission as it relates to the closing of commercial Morse operations in the US. Visitors begin arriving at 3 p.m.and at 5:01 p.m. the station returns to the air waves. Transmissions usually continue until at least midnight.

Ships and passenger liners once filled the air waves with their radiograms–and with their calls for help when in danger on the sea. Now those bands are largely silent.  Event location: 17400 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Pt. Reyes, CA. See: nps.gov to confirm before going.
