Lavender Festivals and Events

LAVENDER: Deer ignore it. Bees and butterflies love it. Snails shun it. People are re-discovering lavender.
California lavender farms open their doors to visitors in the spring and summer, allowing you to visit, buy lavender products, plants and oils, etc. Some of the lavender farms have event space for birthdays, anniversaries and weddings, one has a policy (around $35) for professional bridal or family portrait location usage, and a few are commercial wineries that grow lavender. If interest continues to grow, expect to see more lavender foods, festivals and events in upcoming years.
Lavender has been enjoyed in many ways since recorded history:
- Lavender was used by Egyptians in mummifications.
- Romans used it in their bathhouses.
- Medieval monks used lavender in tonics and laundries.
- For centuries English farmers placed lavender flowers in their hats to prevent headache and sunstroke.
- For centuries lavender was used to freshen fabrics and repel insects.
- Pre-World War I lavender was used to treat and disinfect wounds.
- Hospitals used lavender as an antiseptic and disinfectant to sterilize surfaces and equipment.
- Women have placed sachets of lavender in their closets and wardrobes for fragrance since recorded time.
