Silver City Mountain Resort in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is off the beaten path, but life is pretty good there, even off the grid. You can rent a three-bedroom, two-story chalet or small cabin but either way, you’re asked to bring your own sheets, towels and linens as the property lives off the grid and conserves energy for the important stuff–like cooking tasty, hot meals. Dining is one of the highlights to days spent sightseeing, lazing around in the shade of a sequoia tree, sitting on a rock overlooking Franklin Lakes and Florence Peak or watching Bambi and his deer friends wander through the forest.
The resort (silvercityresort.com) is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains among the world’s biggest trees. If you’ve never visited, the trees (General Sherman and General Grant) are incredibly big and worth the trip. Other hotel options in the national park include Wuksachi Lodge, a concession-operated hotel inside the park.
