California Name (Blame) Game
When you see these pictures, what do you think of? Apples, lavender and maple syrup, of course! All evoke emotions of something sweet–the taste of a sweet apple, the scent of fresh lavender in the fields, and smooth, maple syrup that can’t be beat. They also happen to be girls’ names in California. What are these parents thinking? According to the Social Security Administration more than five people named newborn daughters Lavender, Apple, Feather or Maple in 2013.
It’s just a name, right? In a classic movie, “The Christmas Story,” Ralphie is terrorized by neighborhood bully Scut Farcus. The name sounds disgusting. Having odd names is a tradition in Hollywood especially, where musician Frank Zappa’s son Dweezil and daughter, Moon Unit, have appeared in film productions. Other names on the 2013 roster of baby girls included days of the week, months in a year, cities and even the state of California. Boys didn’t get off any easier. Parents liked names such as Bosco, Mister, Dragon or Tiger.
