San Francisco Stern Grove held its annual picnic last weekend, launching the free summer concert series in Golden Gate Park with Smokey Robinson and Patti Austin. Californians sometimes pay a fortune to see these performing artists, but in this case it was (and continues to be) absolutely free, as it has been for more than 75 years! The public can thank dear Rosalie Meyer Stern, who purchased Stern Grove in 1931 and gifted the park to the City of San Francisco in memory of her husband, Sigmund. She gave it to the city with a catch…there would always be “a free lunch” or in this case, a picnic and free concerts and cultural performances.
