If it’s better to give than receive, Featherweight Boxer Abner Mares will be a happy man on Saturday, Nov. 22. He’s reached deep into his own pocket to give those in need Thanksgiving turkeys and food, allowing them to enjoy a meaningful holiday like he plans to celebrate with his family. Mares grew up in Hawaiian Gardens where he’ll be handing out turkeys and fixins‘ valued at $10,000. The free event in which 300 turkeys will be distributed takes place at Hawaiian Gardens City Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In Hawaiian Gardens it’s estimated that approx. one in five residents lives below the poverty line. During his boxing career Mares suffered an eye injury and was forced out of the ring for more than a year. Working 14 hour work days in menial jobs to support his wife and children, he bounced back but never forgets that there are others less fortunate who need a helping hand.
